Muscovado is pure, whole, unrefined, and non-centrifugal cane sugar that retains all of the sugarcane’s natural minerals. Muscovado sugar has calcium, phosphorous, iron, potassium, and sodium that combine for healthy food sweetener. Only pure honey can compare to muscovado in natural benefits.
The name
“Mascobado” was coined from the word “mas” which means masses or ordinary people. This was intended to show that the sugar was manufactured to contrast other sugar products made by various multinational milling companies and other
“hacienderos”. It was the year 1987 when the Mascovado sugar was first shipped to Philippines’ neighboring country, the Japan. Then in 1992, ATC made Alter Trade Manufacturing Corporation as an official handler of the sugar cane milling company.
Alter trade was borne out of the hunger epidemic that struck Negros in the 1980s, when sugar prices plummeted in the world market sending thousands of farm workers and their families into poverty and starvation. Initial relief efforts to meet the needs of the communities were insufficient. Thus, efforts were focused on how to orient aid extended to the families towards long-term rehabilitation and self-sufficiency. Efforts focused on equipping the families with the skills, practices and tools to help them break away from their situation. Sustainable agriculture that avoids the use of destructive of chemicals and pollutants was also espoused
