Te Piña of Rurungan sa Tubod Foundation

6:00 PM |

The pure pineapple fiber is a pure organic vegetable fabric. It is traditionally used for the female and male “Barong Tagalog.” It is now widely used for other contemporary fashion and home accessories.

The Rurungan sa Tubod Foundation (RSTF), a non-profit organization, is based on the Island of Palawan, located at the southern tip of the Philippines. The Foundation creates an alternative livelihood for women in the more poverty stricken rural areas of Palawan by teaching piña weaving technology. The Foundation also provides the physical and financial infrastructure for these women to engage in this sustainable art form. This endeavor continues to lead to innovations based on the unique looms and weaving methods used on the Island of Palawan.

The Foundation’s name derives from Palaw’an, the language spoken by the Palaw’an tribe. Rurungan is an indigenous Palawan organizing model. It is a cluster of women, usually related or living in close proximity, that pools their work and resources for craft making, planting and other economic activities. A male member from the tribe, known as the panglima (the mediator), often heads the group. Coincidentally, the Board of Trustees of the Foundation is composed of 4 women and 1 man. Tubod is a local word for “spring”, the source of life-giving water, which sustains and is sustained by ecologically friendly practices.

The Miracle Tree called Malunggay

6:02 PM |

Malunggay (Moringa oleifera Lamk) is dubbed as one of the “best bio-food on Earth”. It has taken part of the main stage in agricultural programs in Asia and worldwide. Also known for its various medicinal and culinary usage, many by-products of Malunggay are being discovered and processed on a regular basis.

Containing four times more calcium and two times more protein than milk, seven times more vitamin c than oranges, four times more Vitamin A than carrots, three times more Potassium than banana, three times more Iron content of Spinach, aside from being heavy HDL (high density lipo-protein– a rich source of amino acids, omega oils, and anti-oxidant properties), the capacity of Malunggay to be at par or to top other leafy green vegetables and other fruits is tremendous.

In the Philippines, Malunggay has been a part of the alternative/ therapeutic practices of the Filipinos. Grown as a vegetable tree or a border plant, its tree can easily grow in one’s backyard and will not require a high toll on maintenance. Being geographically conducive for Malunggay propagation and production, the Philippines is now among the top Malunggay producers in the world, just running behind India, Nicaragua, Madagascar, and Hawaii.

Due to extensive proliferation of the miracle tree and the recent discovery of its healing and medicinal capacities, the Philippine Government launched this 2008 a massive campaign on Malunggay planting and by-product production. Congressman Villafuerte of Camarines Sur spearheaded the governmental initiative of propagating Malunggay thru tree-panting by utilizing 700 hectares of land devoted to the growing of the trees. The Quezon City government is urging its constituents to plant Malunggay to curb hunger and diseases. Gov. Arnaiz of Negros Oriental has 350 hectares of malunggay farm.

Rolando de la Cruz is a multi-awarded Filipino scientist and inventor who developed an ingenuous formula that could easily remove deeply grown moles or warts from the skin without leaving marks or hurting the patient. His formula was extracted from cashew nut (Annacardium occidentale), which is common in the Philippines and locally known as "kasoy".

In March 1997, dela Cruz established RCC Amazing Touch International Inc., which runs clinics engaged "in a non-surgical removal of warts, moles and other skin growths, giving the skin renewed energy and vitality without painful and costly surgery."

In September 2000, The formula won for de la Cruz a gold medal in International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. De la Cruz's latest product called DeBCC, purportedly an effective cure for skin cancer garnered another two international gold medal awards, the first from the Archimedes Inventors’ Show in Moscow, Russia in March 2005, and the second one from the IENA International Inventors’ Forum in Nuremburg, Germany in November 3, 2005. The same invention also got the highest score from a panel of international judges, and was awarded the top World Invention Winner – Diamond Award and the Overall Inventors’ Award for 2006 in the British Invention Show last October 21, 2006 in London.

Dela Cruz is also recipient of the Department of Science and Technology’s Tuklas Award for Most Outstanding Invention in 1998 for his DeMole and DeWart products that are now available in malls.

DeBCC is an anti-cancer skin cream made from cashew nuts and other local herbs from the Phillipines. Dela Cruz bested 54 other inventors and 1,500 other entries. The papercuts of Artist Sinag de Leon-Amado

9:24 PM |

Sinag de Leon contemporizes art of paper cutting
By Elizabeth Lolarga, Vera Files
For Yahoo! Southeast Asia

As a child growing up in Marikina, Sinag de Leon thrived in an environment strewn with samples of Philipine folk arts and crafts, her parents being avid aficionados and lecturers on the subject.

She picked up a volume of Childcraft and followed the instructions on how to cut out and form a snowflake out of paper. Snow being alien to her sensibility, she wondered how the intricate designs on pastillas de leche wrappers from Bulacan could be duplicated in her new-found medium.

A vanishing craft in that province, paper cutting has been given a contemporary twist in the series of solo exhibits de Leon has had this year. Her latest solo show “Aninag” at the San Beda Museum in the college campus on Don Manolo Ave., Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa City runs until Oct. 30 with her second free paper cut workshop there on Oct. 23. Tapuy

Tapuy

Tapuy is a Filipino rice wine originated in Batad (a place in the Banaue Rice Terraces), Ifugao, Philippines. This native wine from fermented rice is also produced in the Cordillera Province; particularly in Apayao, Benguet, Kalinga, and Mountain Province. Other names for tapuy in these parts are: tapey or bayah .

The native brew is prepared locally and produced from fermented rice. There are 2 main ingredients: glutinous rice and bubod (starter culture).

The tapuy rice wine is considered as the ceremonial wine served during special occasions (such as weddings) and large celebrations like a bountiful harvest festival. Since the natives can produce tapuy rice wine inside their homes, the local wine is also imbibed by the locals on a daily basis.

Tinubong, as a delicacy, derives its name from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano.

With the other end of the tubong open, a wet mixture of glutinous flour, sugar, coconut milk, small strips of young coconut flesh, cheese and margarine is inserted into the tube. Others also used ground peanuts and raisins.

In the good old days, the tinubong was cooked over charcoal embers until the tubong changed its color from green to a slightly scorched black. Nowadays, however, large-scale tinubong makers use the kind of ovens found in bakeries.
