Crocheted Straw Bags

5:23 PM |

Yvette’s Bags and Beads started as a hobby of owner/designer Yvette Marie Celi-Punzalan, who made these crocheted straw bags for herself before it eventually grew into a business, thanks to the positive feedback from her family and friends.

"When I began, I trained a group of women and taught them how to crochet the straw material we would be using for our bags and embellishments. It is my objective that this series of trainings and seminars would motivate them individually and encourage them to have a positive outlook in life," shares Punzalan, who describes her colorful handbags as a reflection of her bright personality.(Source: http://www.citem.gov.ph)

Leather Journals

7:24 AM |

  • Coptic Journal/Sketchbook Description: 121 sketchpaper pages back-to-back; Binding – single-needle; Coptic stitch

  • Handbound Leather Journal Description: 240 pages back-to-back, ivory-colored, acid-free paper; Binding: Long Stitch; Cover: genuine leather

Alunsina Handbound Books are unique from other bookstores’ journals and sketchbooks. Books are carefully made and invested with our personal time and energy. In fact, each book takes four to eight hours a day to complete. All these on a price that is comparable and sometimes even cheaper than commercially sold journals typically manufactured in an assembly line.

Coptic-bound books are different from other handbound books because it showcases locally made (mostly Filipino and some Asian) and indigenous fabric. So far, it have been using batik, ‘Centennial’ fabric, and habi from Cotabato in Southern Philippines. They also have a limited collection of fabric from India and hand-woven fabric from Burma. They are also in the process of expanding by sourcing more local indigenous textile and those from neighboring countries. Watch out for new indigenous fabrics in their collection soon such as the Yakan hand-woven textile and T’nalak of the T’boli.

Alunsina Handbound Books are distinct because the products themselves are ‘works of art’ that do not only serve as testimony or medium to chronicle thoughts and experiences, but the journals themselves inspire its owners to pick them up and use them, write some random thought, compose poetry or practice calligraphy, or for the ‘artists’ in all of us to open up a sketchbook and draw.”

Like the coconut trees that dot the tropical landscape of the Philippines, Celebes stands tall and proud today. Its corporate odyssey began without much fanfare in 1981 when it manufactured wood products from timber sourced from its forest concession in Butuan City, Philippines located in the island of Mindanao. Yet from this modest start emerged one of the country’s largest export oriented enterprises, right at the onset of the New Millennium.

Peter Paul Philippine Corp. Foundation

On June 29, 1946, a couple of days before the Philippines gained independence from the American rule, and 48 years after freedom from Spanish domination, Peter Paul Philippine Corporation was established in Barrio Pahinga, Candelaria, Quezon Province, making the company one of the corporate forerunners of a then young nation. The plant which was built in 46 days was founded for the purpose of manufacturing desiccated coconut to supply its then parent company, Peter Paul Inc. of Naugatuck, Connecticut, USA, makers of the famous Mounds and Almond Joy chocolate bars. High quality manufacturing standards were established to ensure the reliability and consistent quality of its desiccated coconut supply to the American parent corporation.

Built in the heartland of sprawling coconut plantation in Luzon, which provide the continuous supply of fresh premium coconuts year round, the 13-hectare property is located about 100 kilometers south of the city of Manila.

The property includes managers' residences, a hospital, and recreational facilities for its employees. In 1962, majority interest in the company was sold to the Filipino group, which has since maintained management control. The company has established production facilities to produce other coconut products, such as coconut milk and cream, coconut water, virgin coconut oil, coconut flour/fiber, copra, copra cake, coconut oil, paring cake, paring oil, and other residual products, thus consolidating its strengths in the creation of an integrated coconut processing plant.

GT 111: Philippine Made Electric Sports Car

7:45 PM |
If you're a true Pinoy Petrolhead, you will definitely appreciate and celebrate today's event - the launch of Michel Motors' Gitano. Not only is this this Michel's first foray into designing and building its own cars (Michel is perhaps the foremost kit car maker in the Philippines), it is most likely the most ambitious attempt at building a Philippine-made sports car. It also has the distinction of being the first ever Philippine-made hybrid sports car.

Continuing the work of Michel Motors' founder Nene Syquia, Jan Kierulf and Reggie Sy, with designer Christopher Lacson, set out to create something unique. Using a lightweight fiberglass body penned by Chris Lacson, and a next generation American designed and built hybrid powerplant, it will definitely have sporting character. The lightweight electric motor weighs just over 100kg, and puts out about 250bhp.

The car is still an unfinished prototype, and has several details that have yet to be unveiled, but it is very close to a working, running vehicle. It sets off this Wednesday for Las Vegas, USA, to be part of the world-famous SEMA show.

It's not everyday you get to be part of something not just exciting, but groundbreaking. And it's been my pleasure to have been part of this project (through Glasteck, Inc., who created the custom glass panels for the entire car). Here's to the success of the Gitano, and the Philippine automotive industry!
