The conventional jeepney has transformed into a new image. E-Trikes are not new into the Philippine roads. If you're a true Pinoy Petrolhead, you will definitely appreciate and celebrate today's event - the launch of Michel Motors' Gitano. Not only is this this Michel's first foray into designing and building its own cars (Michel is perhaps the foremost kit car maker in the Philippines), it is most likely the most ambitious attempt at building a Philippine-made sports car. It also has the distinction of being the first ever Philippine-made hybrid sports car.




Continuing the work of Michel Motors' founder Nene Syquia, Jan Kierulf and Reggie Sy, with designer Christopher Lacson, set out to create something unique. Using a lightweight fiberglass body penned by Chris Lacson, and a next generation American designed and built hybrid powerplant, it will definitely have sporting character. The lightweight electric motor weighs just over 100kg, and puts out about 250bhp.

The car is still an unfinished prototype, and has several details that have yet to be unveiled, but it is very close to a working, running vehicle. It sets off this Wednesday for Las Vegas, USA, to be part of the world-famous SEMA show.

It's not everyday you get to be part of something not just exciting, but groundbreaking. And it's been my pleasure to have been part of this project (through Glasteck, Inc., who created the custom glass panels for the entire car). Here's to the success of the Gitano, and the Philippine automotive industry!

BAMBIKE (Bamb EcoLogical Technology Inc.) is a socio-ecological enterprise that hand-makes bamboo bicycles with fair-trade labor and sustainable building practices. Bambike builders come from Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine based community development organization for the poor, working to bring an end to poverty. They are also working on a bamboo nursery for reforestation and have plans for a reef rehabilitation project. Bambike is a company that is interested in helping out people and the planet, dedicated to social and environmental stewardship. Their goal is to do better business and to make the greenest bikes on the planet.

The company, spearheaded by Bryan McClelland, is helping out people and the planet by “doing better business and [making] the most sustainable bikes in the world.” Bambike’s latest design (pictured above) features a custom-engineered triangular bamboo top tube, lime green pedals, and a Shimano Nexus internal 3-speed hub.

Bryan, a proud Filipino-American, started to ride a bike when he was 5 years old. When he was cruising down the hill behind the civic center where he learned on his little red bike, he never dreamed that one day he would building bikes, let alone making them out of bamboo. The idea came to him while he was working on his Masters of Environmental Resource Management at the University of Pennsylvania. His thesis was on sustainable community development in the Philippines – working to create the environmental program, now known as Green Kalinga, for Gawad Kalinga. Bryan’s vision for Bambike is to build the greenest bikes on the planet, and to create as many jobs as possible for the people that need them the most.

Rolando de la Cruz is a multi-awarded Filipino scientist and inventor who developed an ingenuous formula that could easily remove deeply grown moles or warts from the skin without leaving marks or hurting the patient. His formula was extracted from cashew nut (Annacardium occidentale), which is common in the Philippines and locally known as "kasoy".

In March 1997, dela Cruz established RCC Amazing Touch International Inc., which runs clinics engaged "in a non-surgical removal of warts, moles and other skin growths, giving the skin renewed energy and vitality without painful and costly surgery."

In September 2000, The formula won for de la Cruz a gold medal in International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. De la Cruz's latest product called DeBCC, purportedly an effective cure for skin cancer garnered another two international gold medal awards, the first from the Archimedes Inventors’ Show in Moscow, Russia in March 2005, and the second one from the IENA International Inventors’ Forum in Nuremburg, Germany in November 3, 2005. The same invention also got the highest score from a panel of international judges, and was awarded the top World Invention Winner – Diamond Award and the Overall Inventors’ Award for 2006 in the British Invention Show last October 21, 2006 in London.

Dela Cruz is also recipient of the Department of Science and Technology’s Tuklas Award for Most Outstanding Invention in 1998 for his DeMole and DeWart products that are now available in malls.

DeBCC is an anti-cancer skin cream made from cashew nuts and other local herbs from the Phillipines. Dela Cruz bested 54 other inventors and 1,500 other entries. His new invention treats basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer generally caused by frequent exposure to sunlight and usually affects the face, ears, scalp, neck, shoulders, and back. Marcus Tomblin's F-22R "Kermit, the little green racing machine",

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull (vaka) and two smaller outrigger hulls (amas), attached to the main hull with lateral struts (akas). The design and names for the trimaran components are derived from the original proa constructed by native Pacific Islanders.

Trimarans are now being built here in the Philippines and made possible by Melvest Marine. They manufactured boats using finest materials sourced locally and all over the world. Their factory is located in Taytay, Rizal, a 20 kilometers East of Metro Manila.
